A scale rule is not a measuring ruler and buying one for the other is the near-miss worth avoiding. Scale rules carry ratio markings such as 1:100 for reading plans, so they will not give you a true centimetre. For everyday measuring, material decides the rest: metal takes a knife edge without shaving, plastic is light and cheap for class sets, timber sits between.
