Assuming symmetry is the mistake worth avoiding here. Plenty of adapters convert one way and not the other, and there is no way to tell from the connectors alone, so check the stated direction against your source and display. Passive adapters have resolution limits that active ones do not. Longer runs may need a booster rather than a longer cable. See AV cables, docking stations and monitors.
