The top edge is the whole product. A gummed pad releases one sheet at a time with a clean edge, which suits anything handed over or filed. A spiral pad lies flat and tears with a ragged edge unless it is micro-perforated. Backing board matters if the pad is used away from a desk. Ruling and weight follow the pen.
