Ordinary paper fails at this for two reasons. It is cut precisely square, so the first fold sets up every fold after it, and it is light enough that a model with twenty layers still closes. Heavier stock cracks at the crease and refuses to hold. Patterned one side and plain the other is the traditional format and helps students track orientation.
