Craft Crayons
Wax crayons sit on the surface and resist blending, which is exactly why they work for resist painting and rubbings but frustrate anyone wanting graduated colour. Oil pastels smudge and layer instead. Barrel shape matters more than it looks for young children, since a triangular body will not roll off a desk and encourages a tripod grip.
