Crayons That Turn Into Watercolour With A Wet Brush

Staedtler 223 C12 is a box of 12 water-soluble wax-based crayons: draw as with an ordinary crayon, then brush water over the lines to dissolve them into a wash.

Staedtler describe the colours as highly opaque and easy to blend. Used dry, they colour like a crayon. Go over the marks with a damp brush and the pigment loosens into watercolour, so a single crayon can give a bold line and a soft background on the same page.

For special effects Staedtler mention layering and scratching: build one shade on another, then scrape through with a blunt tool to reveal the colour beneath. Each crayon is round, about 8 mm across, and wears a paper sleeve to keep hands clean.

Heavier paper such as watercolour or mixed media sheets copes best with water. The 223 also comes in a box of 24, and Staedtler watercolour paint boxes and brushes pair well with it.

FAQs

Colour an area, then brush clean water over it. The more water, the softer the wash. Let it dry before adding detail on top.
Yes. Dry, they behave like ordinary crayons, and Staedtler suggest layering and scratching for extra effects.
Thicker paper made for watercolour or mixed media. Thin copy paper tends to buckle and pill when it gets wet.
