Match the point to what it is going into. A long pin in a thin cork panel exits the back and marks the wall; a short one in a thick board will not hold paper against a draught. Push pins give something to grip where flat tacks sit flush and are harder to remove. Keep them off soft plaster entirely. See pinboards, display boards and office supplies.
