Ruling is the decision here, and it is set by year level rather than preference. Dotted thirds guide letter formation in the early years, then ruling narrows through 14mm and 12mm to 8mm as handwriting matures. Buying the wrong ruling for a year group is the common mistake on a booklist order. Check page count and whether the cover needs to survive a full year in a bag.
