How tea is produced

Step one
Our global network of tea making masters

Firstly, Bushells have a network of expert tea tasters around the world. Our cuppa connoisseurs continually monitor the quality and consistency of our tea – from plant to pack – to ensure you enjoy the consistent quality Bushells drinkers expect, every time.

Step Two
Plucking from the plant

So, where does our tea begin: With the bright evergreen shrub camellia sinensis – or tea plant.We pluck our leaves from the very top of the plant for freshness; usually two leaves and the bud, for the very best quality brew.

Our freshly picked tea leaves are then left to wither in large open troughs for 12-24 hours to make them more pliable. While they wilt they’re also fluffed, rotated and monitored – so that all leaves get even exposure to air.

Step Three
Fermentation

The next step for our withered tea leaves and buds is fermentation. The leaves are rolled, then left to rest for several hours to oxidise – where oxygen in the air reacts with enzymes in the leaves (exposed after rolling), turning them a reddish brown, as the chemicals inside the leaves change.

This process is where tea’s many varieties are created: the time the leaves are given to ferment, further rolling plus other conditions impact on the flavour and colour of the final brewed leaf.

Step Four
Firing

The final step for our tea leaves is firing. Our fermented leaves are heated very quickly so their moisture level drops below 3% to end the oxidation process. By thoroughly drying out our tea we also make sure it keeps well, so once bagged and packed, you can enjoy our Australian flavour for even longer!

Bushells has a long tradition of bringing Australians together for a good chat over a great cuppa, blended especially for Aussie tastes. We’ve been part of Australian life since 1883, and proud to be a familiar icon that Aussies have grown up with – a delicious taste of home.

It all began with Alfred ‘The Tea Man’ Bushell. An enterprising fellow, Mr Bushell was a tea dealer who moved up to Brisbane in 1883 after the death of his wife, Agnes – a daughter of the famous Brooke tea family. A family business, Alfred’s sons Walter and Phillip took his tasty tea to Sydney to tradeas Bushells and Company – the Tea Men. By 1902 the Bushells clan were established tea traders. But a family rift had emerged. In 1903, the company was split amicably between Alfred in Queensland, and his sons in Sydney and Melbourne. But, when Alfred retired in 1908, he gave his sons the Queensland business. After Alfred’s death in 1910, Bushells Ltd was registered as a public company – and rapidly expanded into Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia.

In 1920 Bushells bought land in todays The Rocks area of Sydney. Here they built a seven storey factory that housed progressive new blending and packing methods, plus Bushells HQ. The building remained with Bushells for over 40 years, and is still an iconic part of Sydney’s story today. Bushells continued to boom – moving into New Zealand in 1937 by personally offering every housewife on the electoral roll a half a pound of tea, free.
