Three things have to agree and getting two right is not good enough. Voltage must match exactly, polarity must match or the device sees the supply backwards, and the tip has to seat properly rather than nearly fit. Current rating is the exception: more is fine, since the device draws what it needs, but less will overheat the adapter. Read the label on the old one. See chargers, powerboards and extension cords.
