Tip shape is the safety decision and it comes first: blunt or rounded tips for early years, pointed tips only where fine cutting genuinely needs them. Blade length then follows the material, with short blades giving control on curves and longer ones cutting card in fewer strokes. Pattern-edge blades are a separate product and will not cut a straight line. See left handed scissors, office scissors and Westcott.
