Around the World

Celebrated annually on October 31, Halloween is one
of the world’s oldest holidays. Derived from ancient festivals and religious rituals, Halloween is widely celebrated today in a number of countries around the globe.

Although most of us spend Halloween dressing up and trick-or-treating - other countries have their own celebratory rituals.

Mexico

Día de los Muertos, which is also known as Day of the Dead, is widely known in Mexico and Spain. This is a three-day celebration that begins on the evening of October 31 and ends on November 2. People would dress up and build “ofrendas,” which are altars where they would present gifts to their dead ancestors.

England

The English are known to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. Do note that this is celebrated after Halloween on November 5. Technically, this has little to do with Halloween but the English stopped celebrating Halloween when Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation started to spread throughout the country. Since their belief is not heavily involved with saints, they had no reason to celebrate All Saints’ Day.

China

In China, Halloween is closely associated with the Hungry Ghost Festival. This is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. Locals would burn incense, orchestrate parades, and conduct operatic performances for the purposes of entertaining the spirits.

Romania

Every year on Halloween, people from around the world would visit Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes’s supposedly home at Bran Castle in Transylvania, Romania. Prince Vlad III of Wallachia, which is modern-day Romania, was the real-life inspiration behind Dracula.

South Korea

Chuseok is known as a harvest festival in South Korea. It is a three-day holiday from the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. This is a way for the South Koreans to be thankful for all the blessings they have received that year. It is also considered a traditional feast to pay respects to their ancestors.

Philippines

In some parts of the Philippines, children would visit houses in costume, singing and asking for prayers for the lost souls who have been stuck in purgatory. This is known as Pangangaluluwa. Due to the catholic background of the Filipinos, they do not recognize Halloween. Instead, they spend November 1 and 2 remembering their loved ones by visiting their burial places.

Poland

In Poland, visiting cemeteries to pay respects to their loved ones has also become a tradition done in early November. This is known as Dzień Zaduszny, which is the counterpart for All Souls’ Day for Catholics in the country.
