Vicks has always been a family of brands for your entire family. Originally named “Vicks Family Remedies” our most sought after product was Croup & Pneumonia Salve. Later named VapoRub, it was created by Lunsford Richardson out of love and concern for his sick son.
Young Smith Richardson had a severe case of croup. Lunsford combined unique ingredients into a salve that when heated by the body would release soothing vapors. Vicks expanded the new product to help other families provide relief for their loved ones. Years later, the very boy who inspired the salve would change its name to Vicks VapoRub and sell it in the familiar blue jar.
Vicks has helped relieve cold and cough symptoms for over 125 years. It started in 1894, when a young pharmacist named Lunsford Richardson opened a store in Greensboro, NC to address the needs of his community. Lunsford created remedies to treat the ailments of his family, friends, and neighbors, becoming a trusted member of the community for the care he provided. He quickly developed a family of 21 remedies and began to sell them under the Vicks name. The most popular of these remedies was the Croup & Pneumonia Salve, which Lunsford created to sooth his own young son’s severe cough. Today we know this product as VapoRub.
In 1894 VapoRub’s unique ability to provide cough relief with an externally applied salve allowed parents to take care of their children who typically refused to take nasty-tasting medicines. In 1925 Vicks published a storybook featuring two elves named Blix and Blee. Intended for mothers to read to children in bed with a cold, the storybook told the tale of how Blix and Blee would rush to a child’s bedside to deliver a soothing jar of VapoRub.
The 1930’s saw Vicks introduce the Vicks Plan for better control of colds, which included advice and products to prevent colds, and included the introduction of medicated Vicks Cough Drops to provide some of the earliest on-the-go relief. In 1941 came the Vicks Inhaler, which delivered famous and soothing Vicks vapors.
In the 1950’s, Vicks increased research and development capabilities. From this effort came our first cough syrups, one of the first of their kind to provide effective cough relief without narcotics. Sinex nasal spray was also introduced in 1959 and provided nasal congestion relief in seconds.
Smith Richardson, the boy who inspired VapoRub’s creation in 1894, understood better than most that Vicks products needed to provide relief you can feel. Recognizing that his father’s Croup & Pneumonia Salve contained unique and noticeable vapors, he recommended changing the product’s name to VapoRub in 1911, as well as changing the jar to the familiar blue colour.
