The Story Behind Bushells Tea
Founded by Alfred ‘The Tea Man’ Bushell in Brisbane in 1883, Bushells started as a small tea shop known for its full-flavoured, counter-brewed blends. Alfred, whose wife came from the famed Brooke tea family, quickly earned a loyal following, and by 1902, Bushells had grown into a well-established family-run tea business.
In 1903, the company was divided amicably between Alfred in Queensland and his sons in Sydney and Melbourne. After Alfred’s retirement and passing, his sons took the reins and rapidly expanded operations into WA, SA and Tasmania. By 1920, Bushells had built its iconic seven-storey headquarters in Sydney’s The Rocks, which introduced modern tea blending and packing technology to Australia. The site became a landmark and a symbol of the brand’s presence in Australian culture.
