The Sunbeam Story
Sunbeam began in 1910 when the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company launched the Princess Electric Iron – the brand’s first household appliance. The name “Sunbeam” was chosen in a company-wide naming contest, and by 1928, the company had introduced one of its most iconic products: the Mixmaster mixer. This mechanical marvel, created by Ivar Jepson and Bernard Alton Graham, revolutionised kitchens around the world with its dual-beater design and diverse attachments for blending, chopping and grinding.
Throughout the 20th century, Sunbeam expanded its appliance portfolio to include coffee makers, toasters, and electric shavers – many designed by the renowned industrial designer Robert Davol Budlong. The Mixmaster even left its mark in science, lending its name to the "Mixmaster universe" model in cosmology.
Despite changes in ownership and industry challenges, Sunbeam remained resilient, later becoming part of the Jarden Corporation in 2004, and subsequently a Newell Brands company.
