Thermal Transfer Label versus Direct Thermal Label

Thermal transfers require a ribbon for printing and work with untreated paper. The text is printed first onto the ribbon, then onto the face stock. These are the ones that are ideal for long-term use.

Thermal direct labels, on the other hand, do not require a ribbon and they use specially treated paper to produce an image. The printing process is simpler but the print has a shorter shelf life. They tend to fade with exposure to heat or sunlight.
