When you need to count just a few things, it is fine to just keep track of the number in your mind. You can also take tabs on paper on a clipboard perhaps. But if the things you are counting are fleeting, it is easy to lose track. And there is no chance to recount because they are already gone. You can prevent this from happening by using a tally counter instead.
