Spine width sets how many fit a shelf run, and mixing widths across a storeroom wastes space you cannot recover later, so standardise before you fill the first shelf. The internal clip matters if the box travels or tips, since loose contents in a box file end up in the wrong order. Label the spine, not the lid.
