The microscope for looking at things, not through them

Stereoscopic microscope, 20x magnification. 10x wide field eyepieces with 2x objectives, dual light sources, inclined body, cast aluminium. 12V 10W incandescent illumination.

A stereo microscope does the job a compound microscope cannot: it looks at the surface of a solid object, with both eyes, in three dimensions. A beetle's leg, a seed head, a crystal, a circuit board, a coin, a piece of bark. The specimen sits on the stage as it is - no slide, no sectioning, no preparation at all.

Dual light sources are the reason to buy this one. Light from above shows surface texture and colour. Light from below shows outline and anything translucent. Being able to switch between them, or use both, is what makes a stereo microscope useful rather than just bright.

20x is the right power for this job. Higher magnification on a solid object gives you a shallow depth of field and a confused student.

Cast aluminium body and an inclined head, which means it survives a school and does not give students a sore neck. It uses an incandescent globe rather than LED - warmer light, and a globe that will eventually need replacing.

  • Stereoscopic: both eyes, in three dimensions, on solid objects
  • 20x magnification (10x wide field eyepieces, 2x objectives)
  • Dual light sources - above for surface, below for outline
  • Cast aluminium body with inclined head
  • 12V 10W incandescent globe (not LED)
  • Insect, seed and plant specimen study
  • Rock, mineral and crystal examination
  • Dissection work
  • Circuit board and materials inspection
  • Primary through secondary science

FAQs

Completely. This one looks at the outside of solid objects in 3D at 20x. The compound one looks through thin specimens on a slide at up to 400x. A school that teaches both biology and earth science generally wants one of each, not two of one.
No. That is the point of it - you put the object straight on the stage. A leaf, a beetle, a fossil, a screw.
Because depth of field falls away fast with magnification, and a solid object is not flat. At 20x a whole insect head is in focus at once. At 100x you would be focusing on one hair at a time.
Top light shows surface detail - colour, texture, hairs. Bottom light shines through the specimen and shows outline and anything translucent, like a wing or a thin leaf. Switching between them on the same specimen teaches students to think about where light comes from.
Eventually - it is an incandescent 12V 10W globe rather than an LED. Ask us when you need one and we will source it from the supplier.
