Seven shapes, one box - the set that shows what shape does to light

7 acrylic pieces: rectangle, semi-circle, right-angle isosceles prism, right triangle, triangle, bi-concave and bi-convex. In a carton with a sponge insert.

A single prism shows one thing. Seven shapes let a student answer the question the single prism raises: what does the shape do? The rectangle shows light coming out parallel to how it went in. The semi-circle is the one that makes total internal reflection obvious, because you can send the beam in along the radius and only change the angle at the flat face. The bi-convex converges, the bi-concave diverges, and the triangles disperse.

Acrylic rather than glass, which is the right trade here: a set of seven glass pieces handled by thirty students is a set of seven chipped pieces by the end of term. Acrylic is lighter, cheaper and survives being dropped, at the cost of scratching more easily.

The sponge insert is worth having. Loose optical blocks in a drawer scratch each other, and a scratched face is a useless face.

Effectively yes. These shapes are designed to be used with a narrow beam laid flat on paper so students can trace the rays. Without a ray box or a slit torch you can only show the rainbow effect, which one prism does on its own.
It is the shape that makes total internal reflection easy to see. Aim the beam at the curved face along a radius and it enters without bending, so the only thing that changes is the angle at the flat face - which is exactly the variable you want students to control.
For ray tracing, no. Acrylic bends light in the same way. It scratches more easily than glass, which is why the sponge insert matters, but it also survives the floor.
One set is one group. For a class practical, three or four sets working in rotation is typical.
Secondary, years 8 to 10. Younger students get more out of a single equilateral prism and a torch.

Returns, Refunds & Replacements

Mega Office Supplies accepts change-of-mind returns for unopened and unused products within 14 days from the invoice date, provided the item is returned in its original packaging and in resalable condition. Original shipping costs are not refundable, return shipping is the customer’s responsibility, and a restocking fee may apply depending on the product type and supplier. Some items, including electronics, assembled or installed furniture, food, beverages, medicines, custom-made products, and certain bulk or special-order items, are not eligible for return unless required under Australian Consumer Law.
