A right-angled glass prism - the one that bends light through 90 degrees

Solid glass prism. Right-angle sides 5.4cm, hypotenuse 7cm, 3.8cm thick.

A 45-45-90 prism does two things an equilateral prism cannot. Point white light through the sloping face and you get a spectrum, same as any prism. But send light in square through one of the short faces and it turns a clean right angle by total internal reflection - no silvering, no mirror, just glass and geometry. That is how periscopes and binoculars work, and seeing it happen in a solid block is more convincing than being told.

Solid glass, not acrylic, so it stays clear and does not scratch to a haze after a term of being handled.

These are made by hand, so the supplier warns dimensions vary slightly between pieces. If you need a matched set for a measuring exercise, tell us and we will ask before shipping.

The equilateral one is the classic rainbow-maker. This right-angled one does that too, but it also turns a beam through exactly 90 degrees by total internal reflection, which the equilateral cannot do cleanly. If you are teaching periscopes or binoculars, you want this one.
Glass. It is heavier and it can chip if dropped on a hard floor, but it stays optically clear where acrylic goes cloudy with handling.
A ray box is ideal. Failing that, a torch with a slit of card taped over it, or direct sunlight through a gap in a blind, both work.
No, and the supplier says so. They are hand made, so there is a small variation piece to piece. It does not affect the demonstration but it does matter if students are measuring angles across a class set.
Upper primary can use it to make rainbows. The total-internal-reflection work is secondary, roughly years 8 to 10.

Returns, Refunds & Replacements

Mega Office Supplies accepts change-of-mind returns for unopened and unused products within 14 days from the invoice date, provided the item is returned in its original packaging and in resalable condition.
