Water-Soluble Graphite in the Lightest Aquarell Grade

A box of 12 Mars Lumograph aquarell 4B pencils: water-soluble graphite for sketches that can be turned into soft grey washes with a damp brush.

Staedtler make the Mars Lumograph aquarell in only three degrees, 4B, 6B and 8B, and 4B is the lightest of them. It suits the preliminary drawing Staedtler mention for watercolour work, where lines need to stay controlled and then fade into a pale tone once water touches them.

In their words it is a premium water-soluble graphite pencil for expressive dry-to-wet transitions, with high break-resistance during sharpening and use and uniform, repeatable strokes that reproduce well. The lead is approx. 3.6 mm across in a blue hexagonal barrel with a black end cap.

Staedtler suggest sharpening with their 511 001 tub model or a 510 10 in metal. For erasing they suggest the Mars plastic 526 50, and for washes their synthetic 989 or water-filled 949 brushes.

One Staedtler box containing 12 Mars Lumograph aquarell pencils, all in degree 4B.
The aquarell lead dissolves in water. Brush over your lines and they spread into a grey wash, which an ordinary graphite pencil will not do.
4B gives the lightest wash and the most control. 6B and 8B lay down darker graphite and deeper washes.
Dry lines erase with a plastic eraser such as the 526 50. Once dissolved and dried, the wash is much harder to lift.
