The Darkest Mars Lumograph Aquarell Degree

Box of 12 Mars Lumograph aquarell 8B pencils, the softest and darkest of the three water-soluble graphite degrees Staedtler make.

8B lays down a thick, near-black graphite line that turns into a deep charcoal-grey wash when water is added. It is the grade for strong contrast: shadows, night scenes, bold gestural drawing and dark accents over a lighter 4B or 6B wash.

Staedtler pitch the Mars Lumograph aquarell at classic watercolour techniques, taking a drawing from dry line to wet wash. The lead measures approx. 3.6 mm, and Staedtler cite high break-resistance during sharpening and use, which helps with a lead this soft.

Because 8B carries so much graphite, a little water goes a long way. Test on a scrap of the same paper before washing over a finished drawing.
