Warm Grey Medium 84: A Mid Tone For Stone, Animals And Shade

Staedtler 371-84 is warm grey medium, the middle warm grey of the Pigment Arts brush pens, supplied here as a box listing of ten.

Where 840 warm grey light gives a whisper of shadow, 84 carries real weight. It is the body colour for an elephant, a koala or a grey horse, the tone of sandstone steps and weathered concrete, and the darker fold of a linen tablecloth. Urban sketchers reach for a warm mid grey to put shade under awnings and down laneways while keeping the brickwork warm. In lettering it gives a solid, readable shadow that still looks softer than black.

Why warm and not cool? By Staedtler swatches the warm greys carry a hint of brown, which keeps them friendly next to reds, yellows and skin tones. If a subject is steel, glass or snow, 87 cool grey medium is the equivalent cool step.
