The Palest Warm Grey For Soft First Shadows

Warm grey light, Staedtler number 840, is the lightest of the warm greys in the 371 Pigment Arts range, and this pack gives you ten 371-840 brush pens.

Light warm grey is the quiet colour that does a lot of work. It is the first shadow on a white shirt, the crease in a curtain, the shade under a teacup or the soft edge of a cloud. On skin tones and cream paper it looks more natural than a cool grey, which can turn a portrait slightly blue. Designers use it to block in furniture and interior sketches before adding detail, and letterers use it for a faint drop shadow that lifts a word without shouting.

Pair it with 84 warm grey medium for a second step, the pair Staedtler put together in the 371 C6-4 Greys and Caramels box. For wider washes of the same shade, the softer 372-840 soft brush pen is also listed.
