A warm light grey is the colour to reach for before anything dark goes down. It suggests the fold of a white shirt, the shade inside a teacup, cream stonework, sand, or the soft shadow under a chin without turning skin cold or dirty. Because it leans toward beige rather than blue, it sits comfortably next to yellows, peaches and browns.

The soft 372 nib lays a wide, even wash of grey with the side of the brush. Staedtler describe the Multi Ink as translucent, so a second pass over the first deepens the tone step by step, and a little 893 blending liquid can melt an edge away. Once dry the ink is permanent and waterproof, per Staedtler. Pair it with 372-84 for the next warm step down, or with the cool 870 when a scene mixes sun and shade.
