A Pale Warm Grey For Shadows And Soft Lettering

Staedtler 375-840, warm grey light, is the lighter of the two warm greys in the pigment calligraphy pen range, a soft neutral with a slight warmth.

Its most common job is the drop shadow. Letter a word in a strong colour, let it dry, then run the pale grey chisel along one side of each stroke and the lettering lifts off the page. It also does quieter work on its own: faint background words, dates under a heading, page dividers, and wedding stationery where the text should whisper rather than shout.

Fully dried Multi Ink takes another layer on top without smearing, according to Staedtler, so the shadow can go down first or last. The chisel is about 2.0 mm, as on every 375.

Staedtler describe the ink as water-based, pigmented, permanent, waterproof and lightfast, with no bleed-through on paper.

FAQs

Light 840 is the paler of the two and suits shadows and background text. Medium 84 is darker and holds up better as readable lettering.
Either works. Staedtler say dry Multi Ink can be painted over without smudging, so let the first layer dry fully and then add the second.
A warm grey leans slightly toward brown or beige rather than blue, so it sits comfortably beside browns, creams and kraft.
Ten warm grey light pens. Staedtler catalogue 375-840 as a single pen and publish no box count, so the pack of ten is ours.
