A Gentler Black For Calligraphy And Lettering

Staedtler 375-90 is the light black pigment calligraphy pen, a dark neutral that sits one step back from 99 intense black in the same range.

Plenty of lettering does not need the hardest black available. Long quotations, place cards, journal titles and envelope addresses often look calmer in a softer dark, and light black keeps the crisp, formal shape of calligraphy while dropping some of the contrast. Pair it with 99 intense black for a two-tone headline, or set a light black word above warm grey lines for a monochrome page.

Staedtler rate the chisel at about 2.0 mm. Hold the broad edge across the stroke for full downstrokes and turn it on its corner for hairlines, so one pen draws both the thick and thin parts of every letter.

Inside is Multi Ink, Staedtler's water-based pigment India ink. They describe it as permanent and waterproof once dry, lightfast, quick drying and free of bleed-through, so a watercolour wash can go over finished lettering.

FAQs

Staedtler sell both in the 375 range. Going by the names and the colour chips, 90 light black is the softer of the two darks and 99 intense black the deepest. Many letterers keep 90 for body lines and 99 for the headline.
Ten light black 375 pens. Staedtler's own listing for 375-90 is one pen with no box count given; ten is the quantity we sell.
No. It is a fixed felt chisel of about 2.0 mm. Line width comes from the angle you hold it at rather than from pressing harder.
Not once dry, as Staedtler call Multi Ink permanent. Their colour-neutral blender 893 can dissolve it, but for lettering it is easier to rule light pencil guides first and letter over them.
