A Supple Black Brush For Lettering, Inking And Deep Shadow

Staedtler 372-99 is the intense black pen in the pigment soft brush range, and this listing supplies ten of them.

Black is the colour that does most of the work in a sketchbook. With the soft 372 nib, light pressure gives a hairline for thin upstrokes in brush script, while pressing down spreads the tip into a thick downstroke or a solid block of shadow. Inkers use it for comic panels, manga hair and silhouettes; illustrators use it to set a strong outline before adding colour.

The ink is Staedtler Multi Ink, a pigment India ink. Staedtler say it dries fast, is permanent and waterproof, does not show through the page and can be painted over without smearing once fully dry. That makes it a good base line under watercolour or other Pigment Arts colours. The same black is made in the medium 371 brush, the 375 calligraphy tip and the 376 bullet tip, so a studio can match one black across four nib shapes.

FAQs

Ten intense black 372-99 soft brush pens, supplied as Staedtler's own box of 10. The Artist Series box is printed 10 pieces and carries the article number 372-99.
No. The 372 has one soft brush tip at one end, with a cap. For a narrower, firmer brush in the same black, see 371-99.
Yes, once it has fully dried. Staedtler say the dried ink is waterproof and takes overpainting without smearing, so a wash will not lift the line.
It carries the same colour number, 99 intense black, used across the 371, 372, 375 and 376 pens, so lines from different tips match.
