Twelve Greens, Blues And A Cool Grey In One Box

Staedtler 371 C12-6 Cool Colours is a box of twelve pigment brush pens covering five greens, six blues and cool grey light.

The greens run from pastel green and may green through willow and a standard green to deep fir green, and the blues move from pale blue and hazy blue through teal and petrol blue to delft and navy. That spread gives enough steps to model a whole scene in cool tones: foreground foliage, a distant hill, reflections on water and a sky, with cool grey light to knock back anything too bright or to add a soft cast shadow.

All twelve use Staedtler Multi Ink, a water-based pigment India ink. Staedtler highlight its fast drying, strong lightfastness and waterproof, smudge-free finish once dry, and suggest it for mixed media work on watercolour paper, canvas, card and wood as well as sketch paper.

Staedtler class 870 as a cool grey, so it sits comfortably with the blues and greens. Use it for shadows under foliage or to soften a colour that looks too strong.
