A Versatile Soft Grade For Everyday Sketching

Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-2B comes as a box of 12 drawing pencils in 2B, a soft grade dark enough for shading that still holds a point for outlines.

2B lies just on the soft side of HB and B, where the line darkens noticeably but stays easy to control. It suits gesture sketches, still life, life drawing warm-ups and first tonal studies, and it is often the one pencil an artist keeps in a pocket notebook.

Staedtler fit every degree from 2B through the H grades with a lead of about 2.0 mm. Their graphite is finely graded, they say, so tone builds smoothly from a light glaze to a firm dark, with the faint metallic sheen you expect from good graphite.

Each pencil has the familiar blue Lumograph barrel with the degree printed on the black end cap. According to Staedtler, every one is made in Germany. Pair it with a Mars plastic 526 50 eraser for corrections and lifting highlights.

2B is one step softer than B, so it gives a slightly darker, smoother line with a little more smudge. B is a touch harder and keeps its point longer.
