The Lightest Working Grade Of Lumograph Black

Twelve Staedtler Mars Lumograph black pencils in 2B: carbon-rich leads that put down a matte mid tone, with less shine than ordinary graphite.

Among the six black grades only HB is harder, so 2B is the one for outlines, first layers and mid greys that you plan to deepen later with 4B to 8B. Because the high carbon lead reflects little light, Staedtler pitch it at drawings that need real depth and contrast rather than a silvery finish.

Staedtler list a soft, blendable laydown, high break resistance and uniform, repeatable strokes, with a lead of approx. 3.6 mm. They give Germany as the country of manufacture. Recommended partners are the 511 001 tub sharpener, the Mars plastic 526 50 eraser and the 5427 kneadable eraser.
