A Matte Black HB With Less Graphite Shine

Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 100B-HB is a box of 12 HB drawing pencils from the black Lumograph line, made with a high carbon content for deep, matte tone.

Ordinary graphite builds up a silvery sheen when layered heavily. Staedtler formulate the Lumograph black for minimal light reflection, so heavy layers stay matte rather than shiny and contrast comes across with real depth.

HB is the firmest of the six black degrees. Even so, Staedtler give it a lead of roughly 3.6 mm, and describe a soft, blendable laydown. It is a good degree for underdrawing and mid-tones before switching to 4B to 8B for the darkest passages.

Staedtler suggest the 511 001 tub sharpener or the Mars 510 25 double-hole sharpener, the Mars plastic 526 50 and the 5427 kneadable eraser, and a 5426 blending stump. The pencils are made in Germany, as Staedtler state.

Staedtler size the black range leads at about 3.6 mm from 7B to HB, and about 4.5 mm for 8B.
Yes, but the black tones look flatter and darker than graphite beside them, which you can use deliberately for contrast.
