Real rabbit fur, 10 x 6cm - the other end of the triboelectric series

Genuine rabbit fur cloth, 100 x 60mm, for generating static charge on a rod. $8.20.

This is a real animal product. The supplier states it is made from rabbit fur and that the fur is chosen because it generates charge well. We are saying that plainly at the top rather than in the small print, because some schools and families will want to know before it arrives in a classroom. If that rules it out for you, the wool cloth does a similar job with the opposite sign of charge.

Why fur. Fur sits near the positive end of the triboelectric series and most plastics sit near the negative end, so rubbing a polythene rod with fur produces a strong, reliable charge - stronger than most other everyday materials.

Wool and fur together. With both cloths you can charge two rods oppositely and show attraction between them and repulsion between two like-charged rods. That is the whole of basic electrostatics in one lesson, and it needs two materials, not one.

10 x 6cm - small, and meant to be held rather than draped. It lives in the electrostatics box with the rods.

  • 100 x 60mm, held in the hand
  • Near the positive end of the triboelectric series
  • Produces a strong charge on polythene rods
  • Buy alongside the wool cloth for the opposite charge
  • Static electricity demonstrations
  • Charging rods for electroscope work
  • Attraction and repulsion investigations
  • Triboelectric series lessons
  • Van de Graaff and electrostatics kits

FAQs

Yes. The supplier states rabbit fur, and that the fur is chosen because it generates charge well. If your school would rather not use an animal product, the wool cloth is the alternative - it charges rods with the opposite sign.
It is meant to be held in the hand and rubbed against a rod, not draped over anything. 10 x 6cm is enough surface for that.
Fur is near the positive end of the triboelectric series, so rubbing a polythene rod with it leaves the rod negatively charged and the fur positive.
The fur flattens with heavy use and generates less charge. It is inexpensive enough to replace when the demonstration starts failing.
For the full attraction-and-repulsion sequence, yes. One material only gives you one sign of charge, and the point of the lesson is that there are two.
