An electroscope answers one question visibly: is this object charged, and how much. Bring a charged rod near the top plate and the gold leaf lifts; the more charge, the further it lifts. Students see a quantity, not just an effect.

The scale is what separates this from a cheap one. A transparent scale on the rear glass wall, marked from 0 to 90 in steps of 10, lets a class record deflection rather than describe it. That turns a demonstration into an experiment with results you can plot.

Teflon insulation on the leaf support. That is the part that decides whether an electroscope holds a charge for a minute or for five seconds. Teflon is one of the best insulators available for the job, and it is why this one still works on a humid day when a cheaper instrument has already leaked away.

Two interchangeable electrodes: a disc top plate for induction work with a charged rod, and a metal hook for hanging or connecting. There is a 4mm socket and a ground terminal, so it wires into a circuit or an earth line properly.

One note: the supplier's scale is printed "0 to 90 C x 10 C" and does not say what the unit is. Almost certainly degrees of leaf deflection. We have asked them; do not build an assessment around the unit until we confirm it.

Leaf deflection - how far the gold leaf lifts. The supplier prints the scale as 0 to 90 C in steps of 10 without saying what C stands for; it is almost certainly degrees. We have asked them, so do not write the unit into an assessment task yet.
Because it is extraordinarily thin and light, so a very small charge moves it visibly. Aluminium leaf electroscopes exist and are less sensitive.
Yes, more than anything else on the instrument. The insulation decides how long a charge stays put. Teflon holds a charge on a humid day when cheaper insulators have already leaked it to earth.
Earthing the case during charging by induction, which is a required step in that experiment. Without a proper earth terminal you are touching it with a finger and hoping.
