Measures water clarity in a stream, where a Secchi disk cannot go

60.5cm assembled, in two parts. 25mm clear polycarbonate tube marked 10 to 400 NTU. $48.00.

A Secchi disk needs still, deep water - a lake or a dam. A turbidity tube does the same job in a creek, a drain, a puddle or a bucket, because the sample comes to the tube rather than the tube going to the water.

How it works. Pour the sample in and look down the tube at the pattern printed on the base. When the pattern disappears, read the water level against the NTU scale. The cloudier the water, the less you can pour before it vanishes.

Range 10 to 400 NTU, which covers everything from a clear creek after dry weather to a stormwater drain after rain. That range is where school waterway monitoring lives.

Two parts. It packs down to about half its length, which matters when it travels in a backpack to a field site. Clear polycarbonate rather than glass, for the same reason.

The single most useful thing a class can do with it is measure the same site repeatedly over a term - turbidity moves with rainfall, and the pattern is the lesson.

  • Measures turbidity in creeks and drains, not just lakes
  • 60.5cm assembled, packs into two parts for transport
  • Marked 10 to 400 NTU
  • 25mm clear polycarbonate - it will not break in a pack
  • Pattern printed on the base to read against
  • Waterway health monitoring
  • Stream and creek fieldwork
  • Stormwater and runoff studies
  • Environmental science projects
  • Before and after rainfall comparisons

FAQs

A Secchi disk is lowered into still, deep water. A turbidity tube takes a sample from anywhere - a creek, a drain, a bucket - which is why it works for school fieldwork.
Nephelometric Turbidity Units, the standard measure of how cloudy water is. Australian guideline values for healthy streams are typically well under 50 NTU, but the right number depends on the waterway - check your local catchment authority.
The water is clearer than 10 NTU, which is the bottom of the scale. Record it as less than 10 rather than as zero.
No. It is a visual comparison against a printed pattern, so there is nothing to calibrate and nothing to go flat in the field.
The tube itself is safe polycarbonate. The waterway is the risk, not the equipment - supervise the site, not the instrument.
