Yellows And Oranges: Six Sunny Brush Pens

In the 371 C6-5 box, Staedtler group six pigment brush pens at the bright end of the spectrum: 105 pastel yellow, 110 bright yellow, 1 yellow, 4 orange, 420 coral and 24 scarlet red.

Laid side by side they make a ready-made ramp from pale butter yellow to hot scarlet. That ramp is what sunrises, citrus, flames, autumn trees and tropical flowers need, and it saves hunting through a large set for the in-between shades. Coral 420 is the odd one out in a good way, a pink orange that works for sunset clouds, shells and warm cheeks.

Warm colours are where Multi Ink blending shines. Staedtler describe tip-to-tip blending, touching a light pen to a darker one, and wet gradients before the ink sets. Start with pastel yellow and let orange run into it for a glow that is hard to get with opaque markers.

A few limits worth knowing: there are no greens, blues or darks here, and yellow will not cover darker ink. Many people add 99 intense black for outlines, or step up to the 371 C12-5 Warm Colours box.

Staedtler state the ink is water-based, pigmented, permanent and waterproof, with extreme lightfastness.
