Umber 790, The Deep Earth Brown Of The Pigment Arts Range

Umber is Staedtler colour 790, a dark, slightly olive earth brown, and this pack holds ten 371-790 pigment brush pens in it.

Think bark, wet soil, old leather, a cup of black coffee or the shadow side of a wooden fence. Umber is the brown artists use when they want age and weight rather than warmth, which makes it a natural choice for sepia style sketchbook pages, botanical studies of trunks and seed pods, and vintage looking lettering. It is deeper than 730 sienna raw and less red than 76 brown, so the three together give a run of earth tones from light to dark.

  • Sold on its own in our 10s, and also found in the 371 C6-4 Greys and Caramels box and the 371 C24 set
  • Pairs with 16 golden ochre for the lit side of timber and sand

Staedtler fill the 371 with Multi Ink, a water-based India ink made with pigments. By their account it dries fast, stays permanent and waterproof, and resists fading over years of light exposure. Because the ink is translucent, a second pass of umber over a dried first layer gives a richer brown without switching pens.

More in brush pens, art markers, visual art diaries and Staedtler.

FAQs

A dark earth brown with a slightly olive, cooler cast. It is darker than 730 sienna raw and less red than 76 brown in the same 371 range.
Ten pens, all 790 umber. Staedtler themselves list 371-790 as one pen and give no box quantity, so ten is our selling unit.
Yes, once dry. Staedtler say water droplets will not harm the dried ink and list watercolour combinations as a use.
Staedtler include it in the 371 C6-4 Greys and Caramels box of six and in the 371 C24 assorted box.
Dried Multi Ink is permanent. Staedtler name their colour-neutral blender 893 as the liquid that dissolves it, and it is sold separately.
