Colour 76 Brown For Wood, Hair And Earth

Staedtler 371-76 is the pigment brush pen in colour 76 brown, a mid chocolate shade, supplied here as a box listing of ten pens.

Brown quietly does a lot of work in a drawing. It shapes tree trunks, fences and floorboards, gives dogs, horses and hair their base colour, and makes paths, soil and rocks sit properly on the page. Sketchers who want a softer look than black also use it for line work, which lends pen drawings an old, sepia style feel that suits travel journals and nature notebooks.

The pen carries Multi Ink, the water-based pigment India ink Staedtler make for their Pigment Arts pens. They state it is quick to dry, permanent and waterproof when dry, strongly lightfast, and does not come through the back of the page. That lets brown line work take a coloured pencil or watercolour layer later without muddying.

The brush nib is firm enough to control and flexible enough to swell a stroke, handy for wood grain and fur.
