Six Earth-Tone Pastel Pencils For Portraits And Sketches

This listing is five Staedtler 100P-SBK6 cards, and each card holds six Mars Lumograph pastel pencils in the warm, classic palette of portrait and figure drawing: white, sanguine dry, sepia light, sepia dark, umber and a lightening pencil.

Staedtler describe the Mars Lumograph pastel as a high quality pastel pencil with a special lead formulation and a high level of pigment, for fine details in pastel. They single it out for blending and hatching, and for expressive sketches and portraits. The lead diameter is approx. 3.6 mm, thick enough for broad tone yet sharpenable to a point.

These colours are the traditional chalk drawing set. Sanguine and the sepias build skin, shadow and form on toned paper, umber deepens the darks and white lifts highlights. Staedtler's own image shows them on brown paper, where the mid tone of the sheet does part of the work.

Keep the point with Staedtler's suggestion of the Mars double-hole sharpener 510 25, or shape it on sandpaper 923. A spray fixative helps protect finished pastel work from smudging.

FAQs

White, sanguine dry, sepia light, sepia dark and umber, plus a sixth pencil Staedtler list as a lightening pencil.
Staedtler list it alongside the five colours without describing its use. Artists generally use a pale pencil like this to soften and lighten blended areas.
Staedtler give the lead diameter as approx. 3.6 mm.
Pastel grips best on paper with some tooth. Toned papers in tan or grey suit these earth colours, as Staedtler's own sample on brown paper shows.
Five cards, each carrying the same six pastel pencils, so 30 pencils in all.
