Medium Degree Charcoal For Everyday Drawing

Staedtler 100C-M is the medium degree of the Mars Lumograph charcoal pencil, the middle of Staedtler's three degrees, in a box of 12.

If you are buying one charcoal pencil, M is the natural place to start. It carries the mid-tones of a portrait or still life, handles most sketchbook work, and sits between the lighter H and the darker S when you add them later. The formula is high in charcoal content, Staedtler explain, for velvety black tones, a textured matte surface and a soft laydown that is easy to correct and layer.

Staedtler also point to excellent reproduction quality, meaning uniform, repeatable strokes, which helps with clean contours. The core is approx. 4.5 mm across, set in a hexagonal wood case that sharpens easily; Staedtler suggest the 510 25 double-hole sharpener or sandpaper 923.
