Five red markers cover a team: quality checkers flagging rejects, a glazier marking panes, a lab tagging samples for disposal, or a print room marking corrections. Each holder has an approximately 3 mm water-soluble lead that retracts after use, and needs only one hand.

Staedtler say the red line is opaque on almost all surfaces, naming paper, plastic, metal, glass, wood, leather and stone, and that it holds up on dark and see-through materials. Being non-permanent, the red can be removed from many smooth surfaces and many textiles, while Staedtler still class the writing as lightfast. Staedtler state the 768 is made in Germany.
