Friction-Head Compass With A Built-In Telescopic Bar

Staedtler Mars basic 554 T01 is a precision compass whose extension bar is built into the needle leg: pull it out telescopically for larger circles, push it back for everyday work.

Because the extension is integrated, there is no separate bar to lose from a school bag. The friction head gives smooth, precise radius setting by simply opening the legs. Both the lead leg and the needle shoe are hinged, so the points can be set parallel and upright when drawing particularly large radii, and ergonomic grip zones help steady the compass.

Staedtler and their 2024 catalogue agree on a maximum circle of about 360mm without the extension and a length of 146mm. The case holds the compass, a universal adapter and a spares box. The universal adapter clamps common writing and drafting instruments, such as a fineliner, into the compass for inked circles. The lead part and needle are both interchangeable, and the lead part uses a 4mm shank.

Staedtler's catalogue also lists the 554 as nickel-free.

FAQs

About 360mm across without the extension. With the telescopic bar out, Staedtler's web page and 2024 catalogue give two different maximums, so we do not quote one until Staedtler confirm it.
It is built into the needle leg and slides out telescopically, so it cannot go missing from the case.
Yes. The universal adapter in the case holds common writing and drafting instruments such as fineliners.
Staedtler 556 E4-HB 2mm leads, which Staedtler say fit all compasses in their range.
It sits between the Noris school compasses and the Mars comfort models, with a friction head rather than a centre wheel, which many students find quick to set.
