Twelve Tones For Faces, Skin And Hair

Staedtler 371 C12-4 Portrait Colours is a box of twelve pigment brush pens chosen for drawing people, running from 107 ivory to 99 intense black.

Portrait work lives or dies on the in-between colours, and this box is mostly those. There are pale bases (107 ivory, 407 light sand, 431 light peach, 21 light rosé), mid tones (450 sand, 470 dune, 207 dusty rose, 73 burnt sienna) and a run of deep ones (729 maroon, 76 brown, 78 dark brown), plus 99 intense black for pupils, lashes and outlines. That spread covers a range of skin tones, lips and cheeks, and hair from blonde to near black, without having to buy each colour on its own.

Staedtler's Multi Ink is translucent, which suits skin: lay a pale base, let it dry, then build shadows in thin passes. Wet colours placed side by side can be blended into a gradient, and Staedtler say dried ink can be painted over without smudging, so features can be refined last. Their blender 893 dissolves the ink if you want softer transitions.

It spans pale to deep browns, and layering the translucent ink extends that further. Very specific tones may still need extra colours, which is normal with any marker set.
Beiges and Neutrals, 371 C6-6, holds six of the lighter tones from this box. Reds and Browns, 371 C6-7, shares four of the deeper ones.
