The 0.4 mm Step Between Fine And Medium Black Lines

Staedtler 308 04-9 is the black pigment liner with an approx. 0.4 mm line, sold as a Staedtler box of 10.

Ink artists often build a line hierarchy from thin to thick, and 0.4 mm fills the gap that 0.3 and 0.5 leave. It gives a drawing slightly more weight than the 0.3 without the heaviness of a 0.5, which suits comic panels, character outlines, architectural sketches and confident handwriting on forms.

Staedtler specify this black pigment as indelible and lightfast, waterproof after it dries on paper, and the Australian catalogue marks it acid free. It can be erased from drawing film and does not bleed when highlighted, so marker or wash can follow the ink. The long metal tip rides along rulers and templates, and the polypropylene barrel is built for long service.

Black 308 liners can stay uncapped for at least 12 hours without drying up, according to Staedtler, and the range is made in Germany. A box of ten keeps a studio, drawing class or office supplied with one consistent width.
