Green Hard Grade Pencils For Fine Layout Lines

Staedtler 148 50 is the hard grade carpenter pencil, green lacquered and rated at approximately 6H by Staedtler, supplied as a box of 12.

A hard lead suits setting-out work where a thin, precise line matters more than a bold one: joinery and cabinet making, scribing to a wall, marking hinge and hardware positions, and layout on dressed timber or MDF. Harder graphite generally leaves a lighter, narrower mark, so this is the grade for precision, while the red medium 148 40 is the grade for visibility.

Each pencil is 175 mm long with an oval-hexagonal section and comes unsharpened, with both ends cut. Shape the point with a knife or a sharpener made for carpenter pencils; a chisel point run against a square or rule gives the cleanest line.

Green lacquer and the print 148 50 HARD on every pencil keep the grades apart in a toolbox shared with red medium pencils.

A hard grade such as approx. 6H leaves a finer, lighter line, which suits precise setting out. For a darker mark that is easier to spot, choose the medium 148 40.
They arrive unsharpened with both ends cut. Use a utility knife or a carpenter pencil sharpener; an ordinary round sharpener is not made for the oval-hexagonal shape.
