Red Medium Grade Pencils For Marking Timber

Staedtler 148 40 is the red lacquered carpenter pencil in medium grade, which Staedtler put at roughly 2H, sold here in a box of 12.

Carpenters, builders, joiners and DIYers use a pencil like this for cut lines, stud and joist positions, measurements and notes on framing, sheet material and plasterboard. Of the two grades Staedtler make, medium is the one that marks darker and is easier to read at a glance on sawn timber; the green 148 50 at approx. 6H is the finer, harder option.

Staedtler supply the pencils unsharpened, with both ends cut square so either end can be brought to a point. Most tradespeople carve a chisel point with a utility knife to suit their marking. The pencils measure 175 mm and have an oval-hexagonal body.

The red lacquer is easy to pick out on a bench or in a tool belt, and it tells the medium grade apart from the green hard grade straight away.
