A Light, Crisp 2H For Technical Line Work

Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-2H is a box of 12 hard-grade pencils for clean, light lines that stay sharp-edged on the page.

Two steps harder than H, 2H gives a precise grey line that erases easily and does not smear much under the hand. It suits layout and construction lines, light underdrawing that will later be inked or painted over, and marking out on paper templates.

The lead measures about 2.0 mm, per Staedtler, and they describe the Lumograph graphite as finely graded and resistant to breaking during sharpening and use. Strokes come out consistent from one pencil to the next, which matters when lines need to match across a drawing.

Made in Germany, as Staedtler state. A metal sharpener such as the 510 10 keeps the fine point that hard grades are bought for.

A single box containing 12 Mars Lumograph pencils in 2H.
It is lighter than HB, so handwriting is readable but pale. HB or F suit notes better; 2H is aimed at drawing lines.
Hard grades sit lightly on the paper, so a plastic eraser such as the Mars plastic 526 50 usually lifts them easily, especially if you drew with light pressure.
3H is one step harder and lighter again. 2H is a good middle ground for most technical line work.
