Twelve Core Colours In A Slim Metal Tin

Staedtler 146C M12 packs twelve coloured pencils into a flat metal tin that slips into a pencil case, a backpack or a travel sketch bag.

Inside: black, van dyke brown, green and willow green, blue and pale blue, bordeaux and red violet, plus yellow, peach, orange and red. That is a sensible core: primaries, a skin tone, a dark red, two greens, a brown and a black for outlines.

In Staedtler words the lead is soft, the colours highly pigmented and easy to blend, and the pencil covers a wide range of dry techniques; the six-sided barrel is their classic shape, and they state the pencils are made in Germany.

Why a tin rather than a cardboard box? It protects the points in a bag, closes flat, and lasts for years as a pencil store. If you want more shades later, the same pencil comes in tins of 24, 48 and 72.
