Twelve Karat Aquarell Colours in a Slim Metal Tin

Staedtler karat aquarell 125 M12 puts twelve artist-grade watercolour pencils in a flat metal tin, a sensible first set for anyone moving from school pencils to proper watercolour work.

Staedtler class the karat aquarell as a high-quality, six-sided coloured pencil whose lead dissolves in water. They call the lead especially soft and colour-intensive, giving anything from delicate washes to strikingly luminous effects once water and a brush go over it on watercolour paper. Used dry, the colours stay brilliant, so the same pencils cover ordinary colouring as well.

Twelve colours is enough to learn how the leads dissolve and blend without being swamped by choice. The palette covers yellow, peach, orange, red, bordeaux, red violet, blue, light blue, two greens, brown and black, which mixes out to a wide range once wet.

The silver barrels carry a coloured end cap that matches the lead, and the barrel print reads MADE IN GERMANY. Staedtler suggest the Mars 510 25 double-hole sharpener for clean points.

Pair it with paint brushes, art paper, watercolour paints and more from Staedtler.

FAQs

You get a single metal tin of 12 karat aquarell watercolour pencils in assorted colours. A brush is not part of this tin.
To get washes, use watercolour paper or a heavy mixed-media paper. Thin copy paper buckles and pills when wet.
Yes. Staedtler say the colours stay brilliant in classic dry techniques, so they work as normal coloured pencils too.
We also list the 24, 36, 48 and 60 colour tins of the same pencil, so you can step up later and keep using the same technique.
